Welcome to Coton Fields Allotments - a note from Stafford Burgesses

Do you remember your apprenticeship in Stafford Borough? If you do, Stafford Burgesses would like to know about it and possibly help you to be enrolled as a Burgess of the Borough.

Apprenticeship, (or ‘Servitude’ as it is known), is one of the main ways to qualify for this ancient role. In days gone by, it was the burgesses that ran the town and they were generally the skilled workers in the community. Many had served seven years indentured to a master to learn their trade.
In more modern times the indentures were with Companies, or other organisations, for periods of three to five years. The meaning of apprenticeship has varied a lot recently, so the current requirements are for a formal commitment to spend at least three years achieving a recognised qualification in your chosen discipline. That qualification may be a degree, an NVQ level 3 or 4, recognition by a professional body, or a similar  approval certificate. Training must have been based in Stafford and after qualification you must have spent at least two years using that knowledge within the borough. Disciplines such as engineering, nursing, public service (like police), business administration, medicine, accountancy, legal, surveying, or hairdressing, may all offer suitable routes.
Stafford Burgesses have been around since the 11th century and need new members to carry on this important local tradition, which has a legal status. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in being sworn in by the Mayor of Stafford, (in February), please contact the Mayor’s office, call Stafford 823067, or visit www.staffordburgessesguild.com .
